Tactical medicine course

World Extreme Medicine (WEM) and its team of medical professionals offer the following battlefield medical training program based on the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCC) program. The TBCP was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Trauma System to teach evidence-based life-saving techniques and strategies to provide the best possible care for battlefield injuries. This program is available in Ukrainian.
We believe that a high quality education is fundamental to creating highly effective people who can make a difference in life and death on the modern battlefield. We believe we have the experience to deliver this education effectively, and we are honored to do so in our efforts to support the Ukrainian people.

Purpose and rationale of the training

To train and develop advanced military medics to provide effective medical intervention in the context of complex conflict.
These individuals will be trained in a context of high fidelity and to a level from which they can train and develop other members of the Ukrainian armed forces. This will enhance the impact of initial training and maintain high standards during knowledge transfer.

Training team

The goal is to develop advanced practical skills in frontline military medics and requires a maximum ratio of 1 WEM trainer per 10 students.
This will allow students to understand and demonstrate competence in the relevant practical skills, which in turn will allow them to move forward as instructors. These trainers will then be able to train 10 more medical professionals. Ultimately, this will allow a large number of students to be trained as a small training team on their own.
The initial training program, delivered by Ukrainian physicians, will be mentored by the WEM team to ensure that they are properly supported to deliver the training effectively.

What we need

We ask the Ukrainian Special Forces to select and provide us with 10-20 servicemen who have the potential to excel in the above training and become effective trainers of their own choosing. We will train them to the highest level in 4 days.

While priority is given to staff with medical experience, we can also provide this training to non-medical staff or those with minimal or basic medical knowledge. The course content will be modified according to the experience level of the learners to make it more appropriate.

Bleeding control courses

Courses on Stopping Bleeding: Importance for Frontline Kherson Region
Courses on stopping bleeding are critically important for areas close to the combat zone, such as the frontline Kherson region. Their value lies not only in saving lives but also in strengthening local communities' resilience to the challenges of war.

What Do Bleeding Control Courses Cover?

Basic Knowledge About Bleeding:
  • Types of bleeding (capillary, venous, arterial).
  • Understanding the urgency of stopping blood loss to save lives.
Methods for Stopping Bleeding:
  • Proper use of tourniquets: application techniques, positioning, and duration.
  • Wound packing with hemostatic agents.
  • Artery compression and improvised methods for bleeding control.
Practical Skills:
  • Hands-on training with realistic mannequins.
  • Using improvised tools (e.g., clothing, belts) when specialized equipment is unavailable.
Psychological Preparation:
  • Operating under stress and during shelling.
  • Providing first aid in extreme situations.
Benefits for Frontline Kherson Region
Saving Lives in Critical Conditions: In frontline areas, medical services often cannot quickly reach victims due to shelling, destroyed infrastructure, or danger to medics. Skills learned in these courses enable civilians and military personnel to provide effective first aid before professional help arrives.
  1. Strengthening Community Preparedness: These courses empower Kherson residents to feel more confident in crisis situations. Training transforms passive observers into active helpers, enhancing the community's resilience to the impacts of war.
  2. Reducing Mortality and Disability Rates: Timely bleeding control significantly decreases the risk of death or complications, especially in wartime conditions where every minute counts.
  3. Optimizing Medical Resources: Teaching civilians the basics of tactical medicine reduces the burden on hospitals and mobile medical teams, as volunteers or even victims themselves can handle initial lifesaving measures.
  4. Providing Psychological Support to the Community: The ability to help others and be useful in critical situations reduces anxiety among the population. This fosters a sense of control over circumstances, even in unpredictable conditions.
  5. Preparing Youth and Volunteers: In Kherson, volunteers regularly evacuate people, deliver humanitarian aid, and face risks. These courses will help them perform their duties more effectively while also preparing the youth for unforeseen challenges.
Conducting bleeding control courses is an investment in people's lives. In the context of Kherson, where war not only looms nearby but directly affects the community, such initiatives save lives, strengthen resilience, and provide confidence in the future.
